We pour stamped concrete and we set pavers, so we don't need either to win. In Georgetown the decision mostly comes down to which side of I-35 you're on and what your HOA prefers. Here's the comparison with 2026 numbers.
Cost
Broom concrete: $9–$13 per square foot. Stamped concrete: $15–$24. Concrete pavers: $16–$26 installed on a compacted base with edge restraint. Natural stone (Lueders limestone, flagstone) set on a slab: $25–$40. On a 400-square-foot patio: about $4,500 broom, $7,500 stamped, $8,500 pavers, $13,000 stone.
Clay and limestone
This is the one that decides it on the east side. On Blackland clay, pavers heave and roll individually as the soil swells and shrinks — you see it in every east-side patio more than five years old, with a wave across the middle and joints opening. A reinforced stamped slab on an engineered base moves as one piece and the pattern hides the control joints. On the west side's limestone, both stay flat, and it's a matter of taste and budget.
Heat
Dark stamped concrete and dark pavers are both too hot to walk on barefoot in July. Color decides it, not material: light stamped or light pavers are fine, and cool-deck acrylics on a pool deck are best.
Weeds, ants and maintenance
Pavers have joints; joints get weeds and fire ants and need polymeric sand every few years plus a pressure wash. Stamped concrete has control joints every 10 feet and otherwise no gaps; it needs a UV sealer every 2–3 years to keep its color.
Repairs
Pavers' real advantage: lift, re-base, reset a bad section for a few hundred dollars. A cracked stamped slab is harder to patch invisibly, though foam lifting handles settlement.
HOAs and resale
Many Georgetown HOAs — and most buyers in Wolf Ranch and Sun City — read pavers or stone as premium. Stamped concrete gets most of the look for less, and in a Lueders-limestone pattern on a limestone house it's hard to tell. On the clay side, a buyer's inspector will note heaved pavers; a flat stamped patio is a plus.
The decision
- Stamped concrete east of I-35, on pool decks anywhere, and when budget matters.
- Pavers west of I-35 when you want the look and the HOA prefers them, and on driveways where resettability matters.
- Natural stone on a slab when the house and the budget call for the real thing.
Common questions
Which is cheaper, stamped concrete or pavers?
Stamped concrete, by roughly 10 to 25 percent: $15–$24 per square foot versus $16–$26 for pavers. Broom-finished concrete is far cheaper than either.
Do pavers heave on clay?
Yes, individually — that's the problem. On the east side of Georgetown, Round Rock and Hutto, paver patios wave within a few years. A reinforced slab on an engineered base moves as a unit.
Does stamped concrete crack?
At the control joints by design, which we cut along the pattern lines. Random cracking means a bad base or no rebar.
Which is cooler?
Light colors of either. Dark anything burns feet here. Cool-deck acrylic over concrete is the coolest pool-deck surface.
Will my HOA allow stamped concrete?
Nearly all Georgetown HOAs allow it with a pattern and color submittal; Sun City needs a Modification Request. We prepare the packet.
