What's built in
We're aiming for level AA of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 on every page. Whenever we rebuild the site, we go through it using only a keyboard, then with screen readers, then on a phone, then with automated checkers.
Under the hood, each page is written in semantic HTML with one clean heading outline, a skip link to the main content, and landmarks marking off the header, navigation, main area and footer. The skip link means a screen reader user doesn't have to wade through the menu on every page to reach the words. Menus and forms can be worked from a keyboard alone, and whatever has focus is visibly outlined.
Text and background colors clear the AA contrast ratio. You can zoom text to 200 percent and nothing disappears. Nothing flashes, and nothing moves in a way you can't stop; if your device is set to reduced motion, animations are switched off entirely. Every picture carries a written description, each field in a form is labelled, and no form will time out on you.
Where it still falls short
Some of our photographs show job-site conditions that don't translate neatly into words. The description we write covers what matters for that page, but it may not cover everything you'd want to know. We'd rather say that plainly than pretend every photo is perfectly described. If a description leaves you short, call and we'll talk you through what's in the picture.
