Concrete in Hutto

Concrete work for Hutto — the deepest clay in the county

Hutto sits on the thickest Blackland Prairie clay in Williamson County. Every slab we pour here is built for that first, and everything else second.

Rebar grid on chairs over compacted base inside driveway forms, ready for inspection

Hutto is entirely east of the fault, on the deep Houston Black clay that gave the Blackland Prairie its name — some of the most expansive soil in Texas. A driveway poured on it the way builders poured them in Star Ranch, Hutto Parke, Emory Farms, Enclave, Riverwalk and Brooklands between 2005 and 2020 — four inches, wire mesh on the ground, no base — heaves at the garage, cracks across the middle and drops at the approach within a decade, and the 2022–23 drought accelerated all of it. Hutto's growth along SH 130, Highway 79 and Chris Kelley Boulevard means thousands of those driveways are coming due.

Our Hutto work is built for the clay: over-excavation of 8 to 12 inches, moisture-conditioned or select-fill base compacted in lifts, #3 rebar on chairs, thicker approaches, control joints at the right spacing, and expansion joints at the garage and the sidewalk so the driveway and the house can move separately. Same treatment under patios, shop slabs and RV pads. The City of Hutto requires approach and flatwork permits; the HOAs review finishes; we handle both.

Questions from Hutto homeowners

Why do driveways crack so badly in Hutto?

Hutto's Houston Black clay swells 10 percent or more when wet and shrinks when dry, and the builder driveways were poured directly on it with mesh on the ground. The slab rides the clay's movement and breaks. A replacement needs an engineered base, not just new concrete.

How much does a driveway cost in Hutto?

$10 to $14 per square foot including the clay base treatment — a bit more than Georgetown's limestone side — so $6,500 to $9,500 for a two-car driveway plus tear-out. It's the base that costs, and it's the base that lasts.

Is foam leveling worth it on clay?

For a driveway in a few large sound pieces, yes: the foam is waterproof and doesn't wash out, and it's a morning's work. If the clay has broken the slab into small pieces, no — replace it.

Do I need a permit in Hutto?

Yes — the City of Hutto requires a permit for driveway approaches and new flatwork. We pull it.
